Spanish Language and Cultures

The world is becoming a global village, and more and more Americans are becoming aware of the value of second-language competence and cross-cultural understanding.

The Spanish Language and Cultures minor is designed specifically to help you become a viable member of the global community. Extended study in language and cultures enhances your professional understanding and prepares you for working in an environment of cultural diversity. You will learn several key abilities that include:

  • effectively drawing upon cross-cultural information and frameworks related to Hispanic cultures; and
  • demonstrating proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish.

In addition to 14 credits of required foundational courses that focus on using the Spanish language in authentic contexts and learning to interact with the essential idioms and structures of the language, you also will have the opportunity to choose a capstone course that best meets your educational and personal goals and allows you to delve more deeply into different topics in Hispanic language, culture and history.

Throughout your study, you will have numerous opportunities to participate in service learning projects and other community immersion experiences that will enable you to communicate in authentic and diverse contexts. You also are strongly encouraged to participate in an immersion experience in a Spanish speaking country. This might be a summer or semester study-abroad experience, an internship, or one of the short-term travel study courses offered on campus.
