Pre-Law

Alverno offers a program designed to prepare students for entry intro graduate law school. The program is structured to provide the courses necessary to meet the requirements of most professional schools and is under the direction of an academic advisor who specializes in pre-law counseling.

There is no "best" major for law school preparation. A variety of majors help students develop strong analytical skills and good written and spoken communication abilities.

According to the Association of American Law Schools, a quality Pre-Law program provides an education for:

  • Comprehension and expression in words,
  • Critical understanding of human institutions and values with which the law deals, and
  • Creative power in thinking.

Pre-Law students can attain these skills readily by combining a social science major with study in one of a number of different areas, such as one of the Arts and Humanities (philosophy, history, religious studies or English),psychology, professional communication or global studies.

In all courses, Alverno emphasizes development of the performance abilities that are crucial for the successful practice of law, such as problem solving, reasoning and analysis, communication, and social interaction.

Internship Opportunities
Alverno's Pre-Law students intern in area law offices, courtrooms and criminal justice agencies. This experience helps them earn credits while they see what the field of law is really like.

Pre-Law Advising
Pre-Law students will work with a Pre-Law advisor beginning in their sophomore year. Your advisor will help plan your course schedule and guide your development, providing you with information, direction, counseling, support and insight, and help you develop strategies to prepare you for the LSAT. Your advisor will help you identify and apply to law schools where you will be successful as an applicant and as a student.
