Political Science Major and Support (Minor)

Politics is about taking action to make something happen. As a political science major or support, you will learn how politics works, how people get elected to office, how laws are made and how they affect us, and how you yourself are a political actor. You also will study public policy, the art of creating an approach to deal with issues using laws and other tools of government.

Hands-on approach
At Alverno, you learn about politics through experience, through simulations, such as attending a national model United Nations, and through completing two politically-focused internships, which help you to understand politics and to "do" politics.

Government-Related Careers
You will leave campus with political experience, strong research skills, the ability to work well on a team - all abilities that will serve you in political science and other careers. You will be prepared for jobs in federal, state and local government, not-for-profit groups and civic organizations. Political science also is an excellent background for students interested in careers in public policy, journalism or research positions for for-profit companies.

The political science major also provides strong preparation if you intend to enter the field of law. In political science, you learn about the political and legal system. You also develop research and analytical abilities that are essential to success in law school and the legal profession.

Have you ever thought about managing a campaign? Candidates run for elections, but somebody has to manage the campaigns. With a background in political science and communications, you could be the one to help the candidate sharpen her image and zero in on the key issues. You could talk with the press, organize media events, promote the candidate, arrange the candidate's schedule, and supervise the professional staff and volunteers. If your candidate wins, there is no telling where you could go!
