Alverno offers the options you need to find the right direction in music. Whether you choose a Bachelor of Arts in Music or Music Therapy, your opportunities will grow alongside your capabilities as a musician.

In all Alverno music majors, faculty help you shape your program to match your plans. Internships help you test your growing abilities against professional requirements. And a wide range of performance opportunities and visiting artists assure a strong dialog of musical ideas.

Music Resources and Internships

Libraries and labs
One of Milwaukee's major music libraries is on campus, offering a large collection of written and recorded music. Music students may also use special labs devoted to electronic music, and music therapy.

Internships
All music majors "rehearse" their chosen career directions through off-campus internships. In classrooms, therapy settings, recording studios and performance halls, students see firsthand the many directions that music makes possible.

Performance Opportunities
Milwaukee hosts one of America's top orchestras and many top-quality smaller groups. An extraordinary range of touring artists visit Milwaukee with tastes ranging from classical to rap. Students take full advantage of Milwaukee's many music outlets. Students have the opportunity to join The Alverno Chorus, special ensemble groups and community ensembles.

Fields of Study

Music Therapy
Music therapists work with individuals from infants through the elderly using the therapeutic application of music to meet a wide variety of needs. Alverno has been a pioneer in music therapy, creating one of the first two Music Therapy programs in the United States. The program includes a six-month internship after graduation and leads to national certification as a music therapist.

Bachelor of Arts in Music
This major prepares students who are interested in music-related careers, such as arts management, writing about and reviewing music, or the broad range of activities referred to generally as the "music business." It emphasizes an understanding of music's role in culture, here and around the world. The program allows for a double major or combination with support areas such as business, communication or the humanities.

Career Opportunities
A Bachelor of Arts in Music will train you for a variety of music and music-related careers. Students combine this major with another major or with two minors.

When you combine the music program with one of these areas of study, you can see the options that are open to you:

  • Business and Management: Arts administration, music marketing, music retail fields, music publishing
  • Computer Studies: Music software design, music publishing
  • Professional Communication: radio, video production, arts criticism, public relations for a music-related business
  • Dance/Theatre/Visual Arts: Dance/choreography, acting, directing, graphic art or design
  • History/Science/Social Science: graduate work in areas such as anthropology, musicology or sociology
