Management
Accounting
As a management accounting major, you will build a strong and diverse background in accounting, finance, economics, marketing, organizational theory, computer technology and business policy and strategy. In addition, you will develop the interpersonal skills needed to work effectively with others to organize and delegate tasks, motivate and develop people and achieve organizational goals.
Today, management accountants are more involved with decision making, directing management teams, and strategic planning. A degree in management accounting will prepare you for a variety of opportunities in the world of financial administration, whether in the corporate, not-for-profit or government sector.
Sampling of courses
A broad range of business and management, computer studies and liberal arts courses throughout the curriculum support the accounting courses. Here is a sampling of courses you will take as a management accounting major:
- New Enterprise Accounting Issues
In this course you will use critical thinking and problem solving abilities to address accounting and financial management issues for a new company. These include using accounting information for strategic planning, supporting decisions and performance measurement.
- Reporting and Management Accounting Issues
In this class you will develop your team and interpersonal skills to deal with more complex issues using accounting information to provide guidance to management.
In addition, you will analyze the incentive, behavioral and organizational issues that arise when using management accounting information.
- Growth and Expansion Accounting Issues
In this class, you will analyze the financial records of a company and address accounting issues related to accounting, financial and tax matters. You will apply your team and interpersonal skills to deal with these more complex issues using accounting information to provide guidance to management and to respond to emerging financial reporting issues.
Real Life Experiences
A number of experiences provide a bridge between academic work and professional practice that enable you to apply your business and accounting knowledge in a broader organizational context.
These experiences may include internships, an experiential learning seminar or business practicum. You may work in a bank, in a company's accounting department, or in the offices of a small accounting services firm. These off-campus placements can create valuable connections for job opportunities after graduation.
