English Language Arts minor
for early/middle childhood education and middle childhood/early adolescence education majors

The language arts are at the heart of an elementary and middle school teacher's curriculum. Even when a teacher is working with students on other subjects such as science, social studies, or mathematics, a teacher's knowledge and skills related to language play a critical role - so critical that some education critics have argued that language arts ought to be the sole focus of the first four years of the elementary program.

Alverno's minor in English language arts for elementary and middle school teachers is built on the assumption that teachers need not only teacher training, but also solid development in an area of study that includes work at the advanced levels. Completing a minor in English language arts meets State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction requirements for a certifiable minor.

While the coursework you study in English language arts goes far beyond what you will be teaching in the elementary and middle school grades, it is coursework that provides the personal grounding that will support your work in teaching reading, writing, speaking, listening, thinking, literature, etc.

You learn to analyze literary works from various cultures and genres. You study the basic assumptions and approaches of literary criticism, and integrate your own insights and judgments through effective writing and oral communication with your peers. You study the structure and history of language and linguistic development. Finally, you design learning and assessment experiences appropriate to the elementary/middle school environments.

Your coursework in English language arts includes courses from English, professional communication, theater arts and education.
