Computing and Information Technology Major

Today’s global economy is driven by technology and information. Is it any surprise that the occupations projected to grow the fastest are all related to computers, the Internet and information systems?

Alverno faculty have combined a solid foundation in computing and information technology with the abilities developed through a strong liberal-arts approach to learning – abilities such as analysis, effective communication, ethical valuing and problem solving.

Students who major in Computing and Information Technology can choose courses that provide preparation for positions such as

  • Business Systems Analyst
  • Web Technology Specialist
  • Information Technology Specialist

Internships for real-life experience
All Computing and Information Technology majors complete at least one semester-long internship at a local business, agency or research site. You might be involved in Web-site development, or in system implementation and maintenance. Your assignment may be as a project leader, or assisting an organization through a computer conversion by use of effective communication, training and change management.

Your internship is where you’ll gain the hands-on experience of what a working computer specialist does, with direction from an on-site mentor. You’ll also make career contacts you can use for jobs or additional experience. During your internship, you’ll meet regularly with a faculty instructor and other interns in a seminar at Alverno to discuss problems, reflect on experiences and celebrate advances.
