Bachelor of Science in Nursing for RNs -
Weekend College Program

The Weekend College Nursing program meets the academic needs of the learner who has nursing experience as well as previous academic preparation and has earned a diploma or associate degree in nursing. Building upon the student's basic program, the Alverno nursing curriculum continues to develop the student's ability to solve problems that arise in nursing practice, to understand the values and ethics that underpin her practice, and to communicate effectively with colleagues and patients.

At the conclusion of her program of studies, the student demonstrates the following outcomes:

  • uses the nursing process within an analytic framework to meet health/illness needs of individuals, families and groups
  • makes value judgments reflecting respect for the
    dignity and individuality of others
  • engages in facilitative, supportive, goal-directed interactions
  • collaborates as a member of the health team to facilitate the adaptive process
  • uses adaptation theory in analyzing environmental influences
  • accepts a commitment to fulfill the responsibilities of a professional practitioner in contemporary society.

Liberal arts and support area (minor) courses are integral to the program and consistent with Alverno's belief in the value of liberal education. Students can choose a minor in business and management, professional communication, integrated arts and humanities, or computing and information technology.

For admission, a student must be a registered nurse graduated from a nationally accredited nursing school.

Evidence of knowledge in science areas can be obtained by transfer credit, CLEP, ACT, NLN exams, or course enrollment. NLN exams are not transferable and must be taken through the Nursing Division at Alverno College.
