Administrative Leadership Program (MAE Degree + DPI #51 license)
Total semester hours: 33
Educators who want to prepare for the role of principal in an elementary, middle or secondary school build on their understanding of learners and learning in order to create effective environments and organizational structures that support learning. Alverno's unique program of assessment and feedback on key performance areas is relevant and supportive to the work of teachers.
Alverno's program is the first administrative preparation program in Wisconsin to use the Interstate School Leader Licensure Consortium Standards for School Leaders (the basis for the Department of Public Instruction code for licensing principals).
Preparation for Leadership . . .
The Administrative Leadership program is designed for practicing teachers and administrators, who are not principals, but who want to become licensed as principals. Graduates of the program will be prepared to be leaders as principals. They will understand and be able to perform the essential leadership functions of a principal. They will know their administrative strengths and will have a professional plan for their further development upon completion of the degree.

Alverno's faculty is nationally recognized for development of theory and practice in teaching, learning and assessment. Through Alverno's assessment process, candidates in the program will receive feedback on the following:
- Principles and Practice of Leadership
- Professional Interaction
- Problem-solving Skills
- Decision-making Processes
The coursework is designed specifically for principals and requires a total of 33 semester hours, which includes 9 semester hours in core courses and 24 semester hours in Administrative Leadership courses. In the core courses, the student develops a solid theoretical base in development, learning, inquiry and change. The Administrative Leadership courses develop the knowledge and skills necessary for the role of principal.
Administrative Leadership (License #51)
Students with a prior master's degree and an initial teaching license may complete coursework for Administrative Leadership as a separate licensure program. They must submit transcripts of their previous master's-level work and will be required to take any core or specialization courses for which they do not have prior transfer coursework.
Instructional Leadership (MAE Degree + DPI #10 license)
Total semester hours: 33
The specialization leading to the Director of Instruction (10) license in Wisconsin prepares practicing teachers to take leadership roles in curriculum and instruction at the K-12 level, as learning coordinator, curriculum developer, staff development director, etc.
Qualified candidates must be licensed teachers working in a PK-12 setting – an elementary, middle or secondary school or central services site --where they will be able to complete a practicum. Candidates must have completed three years of successful teaching as a licensed teacher to be eligible for the Director of Instruction license. Degree candidates complete the core requirements for the Master of Arts as well as the following courses:
- Mentoring: Strengthening Professional Practice (3 cr)
- The Purposes of Education in a Democracy (3 cr)
- Professional Roles in School Communities (3 cr)
- Frameworks for Curriculum Development (3 cr)
- Frameworks for Assessment Practice (3 cr)
- Elective Course (3 cr)
Director of Instruction (License #10)
Students with a prior master’s degree may complete coursework for the Director of Instruction license as a separate licensure program. They must submit transcripts of their previous master’s-level work and will be required to take any core or specialization courses for which they do not have prior transfer coursework.
Reading Teacher (DPI #316 license), Reading Specialist (DPI #17 license)
Total semester hours: 33 - 39*
The specialization in reading is designed for licensed PK-12 teachers interested in developing their teaching ability or in qualifying as reading teachers or reading specialists. Courses meet guidelines of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the International Reading Association for the preparation of reading teachers and reading specialists.
Degree candidates must be licensed teachers working in a PK-12 setting where they will be able to complete a practicum. In addition, in order to be eligible to hold a Wisconsin Reading Teacher (316) license, teachers must have completed two years of successful regular classroom teaching experience.
Candidates who want to earn the Reading Teacher license (316) must complete the following courses:
- Literature in the PK-12 Setting (3 cr)
- Integrated Literacy Development I (3 cr)
- Integrated Literacy Development II (3 cr)
- Content Area Reading Strategies (3 cr)
- Adapting Strategies for Inclusive Settings (3 cr)
- Practicum on Teaching Reading in Elementary/Middle/Secondary Grades (3 cr)
*Up to six credits of undergraduate work may be accepted as transfer credit, as determined by the Reading faculty.
Reading Teacher License (License #316)
Students with a bachelor’s degree and an initial teaching license may complete coursework for the Reading Teacher (316) license as a licensure-only program.
Candidates for the Reading Teacher license must complete at least 18 semester credits, with at least 12 of those credits taken beyond the bachelor’s degree. Candidates are asked to submit undergraduate transcripts to determine if 6 credits can be transferred. In addition, in order to be eligible to hold a Wisconsin Reading Teacher license, teachers must have completed two years of successful regular classroom teaching experience.
In order to be eligible to hold a Wisconsin Reading Specialist (317) license, teachers must be eligible to hold a Wisconsin Reading Teacher license. In addition to meeting the core courses and Reading Teacher license requirements, candidates for the Master of Arts specialization in reading must take the following courses to fulfill the requirements of the program and for the Reading Specialist license (#17):
- Mentoring: Strengthening Professional Practice (3 cr)
- Program Development for the Reading Specialist (3 cr)
- Practicum: Guiding and Directing the PK-12 Reading Program (3 cr)
Reading Specialist License (License #317)
Teachers who already hold both a master’s degree and the Reading Teacher license (316) can complete the Reading Specialist license.
