Management Accounting Major

The CMA designation, like the CPA designation for certified public accountants, is the professional recognition of a certified management accountant. A CPA typically develops their knowledge and abilities for work in auditing and taxation, whereas a CMA usually works in an organization to help manage the accounting responsibilities, to keep the financial records, and to participate in management and decision making for the company. The Alverno Management Accounting program is one of only a few offered in Wisconsin. Upon completion of the program, you are eligible to take the CMA examination for certification.

Maybe you thought the first thing you might see describing accounting was numbers, numbers and more numbers. Well, when you major in Management Accounting there are lots of numbers, but why? It is using the numbers to make good decisions. These decisions could be how much money is needed to start a business, should a company start doing business in West Africa, which computer system should a hospital buy, what will be the price of a new product, and how many people can an advertising agency hire next year. So, if you like making decisions, offering recommendations and working with lots of different people (and numbers, too), Management Accounting could be a good match for you.
