Music Therapy

The Music Therapy major prepares you to work with individuals, from infants through the elderly, using the therapeutic application of music. This could be to help people with mental health needs, cognitive and physical disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease, substance-abuse problems, brain injuries and chronic illnesses.

Alverno has been a pioneer in music therapy, creating one of the first two music therapy programs in the United States. It is the only certified program in Wisconsin and the Midwest. The program includes a six-month internship after graduation and leads to national certification as a music therapist. There is even a music therapy clinic at Alverno for you to gain experience.

As a professional music therapist, you will participate in the assessment, treatment and evaluation of clients in a variety of clinical facilities. This involves using music to promote positive changes in the psychological, social, physiological and physical functioning of the clients. Music therapy makes a difference for people with diagnosed mental health needs, cognitive and physical disabilities, Alzheimer's disease, substance abuse problems, brain injuries and chronic illnesses.
